This research program will provide rigorous causal evidence on whether, and how, public housing programs in low-income countries influence economic and social mobility and individual well-being of the urban poor. An important innovation of this research is to exploit experimental variation in beneficiary selection induced by the widespread use of public lotteries by Indian housing authorities in order to isolate the causal effect of public housing provision.
